Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of depression, anxiety, and stress and its effect on academic achievement among Vietnamese medical students. Methods: An accelerated prospective cohort study among 623 medical students at a public medical university in Vietnam was carried out during the academic years 2012-2013. Depression, anxiety, and stress were measured using the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scales 21 items (DASS-21). For academic achievement, the students’ Grade Point Average (GPA) was recorded through two consecutive semesters of the academic year 2012-2013. Generalized Estimating Equation (GEE) was applied to identify any associations between depression, anxiety, and stress scores and students’ GPA adjusting for the effects of time of measurement, within cluster correlation and demographic covariates. Results: The prevalence of moderate to severe depression, anxiety, and stress were 22.8%, 54.64%, and 20.78%, respectively. Of these, the prevalence of severe proportions was 5.46%, 24.48%, and 6.34%, accordingly. Higher scores for depression was found to have significant association with lower scores for GPA (mean difference = -0.037, 95%CI: -0.052 to -0.021, p<0.001), whereas anxiety and stress were not found to affect students’ academic achievement. The findings were discussed under the light of literatures.
