Background: Prehypertension has a tendency to develop real hypertension with numerous complications affecting the heart, kidney and vascular system. Studies about the relationship between aortic elasticity and left ventricular mass in the prehypertensives and essential hypertensives by echocardiography contributes to the evaluation of cardiovascular changes in patients. Aims: To estimate the indexes of aortic elasticity, left ventricular mass in the prehypertensives, essential hypertensives and the relationship between the indexes of aortic elasticity and blood pressure, in the left ventricular mass index. Materials and Methods: This study was carried out on 40 essential hypertensives and 40 prehypertensives, compared with a normotensive control group of the same age and gender. The systolic aortic diameter and diastolic aortic diameter and left ventricular mass were all measured by echocardiography. Subsequently, indexes such as aortic strain, aortic stiffness, aortic distensibility and left ventricular mass index were assessed. Results: left ventricular mass index and aortic stiffness were significantly higher, and aortic strain and aortic distensibility were significantly lower in the hypertensives and prehypertensives than the normotensive control group (p < 0.05, <0.01). There were negative correlations between systolic blood pressure, left ventricular mass index and both aortic strain and aortic distensibility. In contrast, there was a positive correlation between aortic stiffness and systolic blood pressure, and left ventricular mass index (p < 0,05). Conclusion: Aortic elasticity ,which has repercussions on left ventricular mass, was lower in the prehypertensives and essential hypertensives, Therefore, it can be considered a predictor of cardiovascular risk factors.
