Background: Palliative procedures have a role in congenital cardiac malformations that do not permit a complete early repair, and modified Blalock-Taussig shunt is an important procedure being used widely in developing countries. Materials and methods: From January 2011 to August 2012, in Hue Central Hospital, 38 patients of tetralogy of Fallot underwent Blalock-Taussig shunt. Most of the procedures were done on children. Cardiac evaluation included detailed history, physical examination, electrocardiogram, chest X-ray radiography, complete blood count, echocardiography (2D, M-mode, Doppler) were indicated. Result: 2 (6%) patients had hemorrhage, 1 patient had pneumothorax, 2 patients had oversize shunt. In the early postoperative period, a total of 2 patients died. Conclusions: The Blalock-Taussig shunt is a relatively safe palliative procedure, requiring fewer resources and less expertise than corrective surgery, making it a suitable option in developing countries.
